Digital Media Lesson 3

 Disadvantages of Digital Media

Addiction: Due to the immersive nature of technology, individuals may find themselves falling down a sort of rabbit hole. A user who is constantly connected, uses the internet for most activities, and stares at a screen may find themselves disconnected from reality.

Expensive: Investing in quality devices and products may be costly. And as this technology is constantly changing and evolving it may be hard to keep up or adapt. Individuals who are unfamiliar with the technology may require lessons which will cost them and this may be a challenge to those who cannot afford to pay for lessons.

Fake News: Due to the accessibility of digital media, it is easy for anyone to publish information whether true or false to the Internet. Others may access this information and unknowingly use or spread misinformation. This now requires internet and web users to check and validate information before using it. Therefore, it is best to use multiple sources and do adequate research before sharing their findings.

Privacy Issues: Engaging with any material posted to the web leaves you susceptible to privacy violation. When you visit sites and make accounts, you allow your information to be taken and used by these sites. Whatever you post can be accessed no matter how private you make your account or delete previously posted information, it is still available. Companies can then track your activity and target ads towards you based on information collected from you.

Question:
Do you find yourself saving for new technology devices?
Have you ever seen fake news? If yes, about what?

  2. I see fake news being sent all the time. Twitter is a hot bed for younger generations and Facebook and WhatsApp is riddled with it due to the naivety of those older than us.
I think more people are addicted than we care to realize and we should all be more mindful of our usage.
